Well obviously we’ve arrived safe and sound; otherwise we’d hardly be updating our blog now would we?! After a three hour plane ride next to a gaggle of giggling girls each wearing personalised t-shirts reading the slogan ‘Good girls go to heaven.... bad girls go to Agadir’ (it seems slogan t-shirts are the new thing in London as the airport was full of slogan t-shirt clad girls giggling away with excitement, while groups of non-slogan clad teenage boys looked on in anticipation), we arrived safe and sound, and were very excited to step out of the plane onto African soil for the very first time.
Morocco is a funny place and it all feels very surreal. Even as we’re wandering the beach and streets it doesn’t really feel like we’re actually here – in fact this entire trip so far feels like a dream. I’m sure it will feel very real when we decide to settle down and get jobs, until we’re happy to keep living the dream!
Our hotel, Sud Bahia, is very basic but nice enough. Aside from the lack of hot water, it is clean which is all you can ask for. Poor Brad will be having television withdrawals though as everything is in Islamic or French! Breakfast is included in our stay however, which is always a bonus (even if it is cucumber and baguettes!).
Everything here is in Islamic or French and an English speaker is rare as hens teeth (which surprised us as we thought it would be overrun with them – where are the ‘bad girls’?!). After a lovely walk along the coastline we were approached by a Moroccan boy who had a good ole chinwag with us about the weather, how it’s much cooler here than in Marrakech as the breeze comes off the Atlantic etc... After a good five minutes he literally shoves a donut (he is carrying a box of them) in my face – insisting that I eat it. He literally pushes the donut into my face so of course I have to take a bite, then he proceeds to do the same thing to Brad. Then of course, after watching us take a bite, repeats the words ‘business, business’ over and over. Yep you guessed it, we have to pay. Not surprising really, but given we only had big notes on us he ends up making a small fortune off of us.
Sales people are a lot friendlier over here than anywhere else we’ve found, and we couldn’t even stay mad at donut-boy. That pretty smile and friendly advice and interest would make any tourist swoon!
So far Morocco has been full of surprises – a stroll along the beach ended up in being accosted by donuts, and a walk in the fishing port resulted in a cute little leather jacket (a rather nice surprise I might add!).
After meeting with the holiday representative from the travel company we booked with (very handy actually), we booked a trip into Marrakech on Thursday (starts at 6am and ends at 10pm so it’s a very full day), and a trek through part of the Sahara and dunes in a 4x4 Jeep on Saturday. Thankfully the tour drops us back in town in time for England’s kick-off match against the USA in the World Cup (we’ve barely been in London a week and we’re already revolving our lives around football).
Our highlight of the day was relaxing by the pool in the garden, when out pops a wee turtle off on an afternoon stroll. Very cute and we shall be on the lookout for them from now on. I wouldn’t mind popping one in my suitcase to keep as a pet in our new flat!
Dinner was also an interesting affair – we went to a seafood restaurant, which turned out to be a popular spot for old gay Englishmen and their little Moroccan boyfriends.
We’re really enjoying relaxing with our only job being to plan our next trip, which we’ve decided will be touring around the UK for a week or so to Cardiff, Wales’ National Park, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newscastle.
Love to all and blog again soon!
Mwa!
Xx
