Hello River Rhine our old friend, we’ve come to play with you again!

As more dedicated blog followers will remember, we spent a joyous five sun-soaked days with Michelle in Basel, Switzerland, where we entertained ourselves with lengthy swims in the beautiful River Rhine. For those that are a little more forgetful, let me refresh your memory with a fee random facts about this beautiful river:

• The River Rhine starts in Basel, Switzerland and comes through four countries: Switzerland, France, Germany and The Netherlands.
• The Rhine ends in the Netherlands and is a working river, meaning it is used for cargo between these four countries.
• The Rhine passes through the Rhine Valley (funny that), which is situated in Germany and is littered with the most concentrated stretch of castles in the world. It’s a beautiful sight, which is why it was the next stop on our tour itinerary.

After leaving Switzerland at 7am, this was another big driving day, but again the time just flies and we stopped every few hours to explore – including lunch in Baden Baden in the Black Forest, which is a beautiful wee town. We managed to terrorise the locals though by starting a huge snow fight, which ended up in everyone being slaughtered with snow. So much fun and a very delicious lunch – the standard German bratwurst diet for Brad, and schnitzel and spatzl for me (a delish German pasta dish)!

We continued on to St Goar where we embarked on a river cruise, which took us up and down the river valley. Passing hundreds of castles, we also saw the Rhine’s most famous sight, the Loreley Cliff, where legend has it a maiden would sing sailors to their death against the base of the cliff.

After the cruise we headed to our accommodation in a little town called Boppard, which is the home off Roman walls and ruins, none of which we saw on account of just spending the night in this village. Oh but what a night, after more schnitzel for dinner we drunk far too much wine and spent the night chatting to our new friends and singing Christmas carols – albeit five days too late!
